brena b, md - the road to dr. black barbie
This portion of the website is all about my journey to medicine. I will be talking about my path to becoming Dr. Black Barbie - the good, the bad, and the ghetto. you may ask where the name Dr. Black Barbie came from, and honestly I don't remember, but it's stuck with me for a couple of years now. yes I want to ultimately change lives, but that doesn't mean I can't also do it in style. when I finally become another Black woman in medicine, I'm going to stand out by default, so I might as well stand out as my full and most confident self.
I'll have blog posts talking about specific of my journey, tools and tips I used to study for the MCAT vs. how I study now, information and tips about the application and interview process, and my virtual village of inspiration and support.
okay, but why am I doing this?
I have a passion to advocate, educate, and cultivate spaces for those who are overlooked and underrepresented by medicine - patients and physicians alike.
During my own undergraduate career and application process, I mostly felt alone and like I was flying blind. I knew where I wanted to be, but I felt like I was on the backroads while other people were on the interstate. Outside of seminars I'd attended and information I could find on Google or social media, I was basically alone in the logistics of this process.
I don't want that for anyone who is coming behind me if I can do anything about it.
To do my part in helping more underrepresented people get to where they want to be, I want to talk about how I'm getting there. We can't be what we can't see, so hopefully by spending time on this website or my social media pages, you can get there too.
So explore this section of the website, let me know what you think, and feel free to reach out to me with any questions. I'm here for you and I want to see you win.
This portion of the website has four sections.
